The  Black Knight Echelon series

Details on the new format Echelon Click here.

35mm and 40mm CA bottoms and 1.25" eyepieces holder Binoviewers. The first of their kind and part of the new Echelon series of binoviewers.

Its hard to beat a Black Knight .

Nicely Machined and Anodized.

Mirror based

10th Wave dielectric optics

35mm Clear Aperture makes it by far the biggest Binoviewer  in the 1.25" format. Also very light at 1.2 lbs Making it the lightest 1.25" with few exceptions.

Nothing comes close ( Except the Elite 2" series.) (Click Here)

35mm, 40mm and 45mm diagonal Modification.

<Click Picture

This mode is an extra $150 and makes the Echelon and Elite binoviewers interchangeable with a 2" diagonal eyepiece holder Or AP Baader Diagonal with it's T-2 system.  The  2" nose piece threads in place for normal use in a dob or unmodified diagonal.

Eye spacing from 45mm-83mm gives it the greatest Interpupillary range of any binoviewer on the market.

The biggest CA 1.25" Binoviewer on the market today and with the best specs.

What are the pay offs of the 30mm and the 35mm.

Compare the fully Illuminated areas at the eyepiece field stop of these 35mm clear aperture units, to an average 26mm unit currently available on the market today.

With an average light cone of f7 with the sq mm measured at the eyepiece field stop.

The 26mm CA* OP 4.56"** will illuminate an area of of roughly (56.7mm sq)

The 35mm CA* 5.8" OP ** unit can Illuminate an area of (113.0mm sq)

*CA stands for Clear Aperture at the bottom of the unit.

**OP stand for the total optical path length of the unit.

You WILL get much better total illumination with a 35mm CA.  To compare to other Units.  (Click Here)

The use of first surface diagonal mirrors will eliminate almost any possibility of reflections that prisms can create and also eliminate chromatic aberrations. These units have custom made optics and have the spec's to outperform any bino in planetary and deepsky use. Try a set of my 1.25" Ultra Plus 24mm SWA eyepiece's for the ultimate 1.25" DS view. Low mag correctors in the 1.3x, 1.5x and 1.8x range are available.  Add one or two diopters for fine focusing.

Is it a heavy unit? Not in the least. And the Accessories are also light. Add them up and they weigh  much less then a 1.25" setup.

The 1.575x  OCA Corrector  except for the all purpose Multimag may be the best all around since it is short, has a relatively low magnification factor and has a great fully illuminated field. It just feels and looks great. And it will not interfere with most Dob filter slides (Like the Astrocrumb) Since it is 3 1/8" long and is parfocal. All of this can not be said about any other 2" corrector on the market today. Remember this is an OCA not an OCS

***** represents a corrector that will fully Illuminate a 45mm+ Field stop (Will fully Illuminate a 2" 40mm+ Wide field.

The 1.5x Corrector may be the best all around since it is short, has a relatively low magnification factor and has a great fully illuminated field. It just feels and looks great. And it will not interfere with filter slides since it is under 3.5" long and is parfocal. All of this can not be said about any other 2" corrector. Remember this is an OCA not an OCS

Minor and gradual reduction in the illumination of field after the fully Illuminated Field ends.

Magnification factors can change slightly (+ or - .5x) and will depend on you setup and eyepieces used.

How to know what to buy

I have been asked this many, many time in the last few weeks. So many choices can be a mixed blessing. All the Black Nights have such strong features in their favor. All are premium units and each are priced very competitively for their size and features. So how do you know which units and accessories to purchase? Here is the way each unit can be viewed so you can determine the optimal outfit that best suits your needs.

BN 22
The original Black Night units work very well and have great light transmission. There are also a ton of corrector options and for a great price. These are comparable to the excellent BW-Optic units. If you are on a budget and want a great entry level binoviewer with better than entry level performance the standard Black nights are a fine choice.

Black Night units 22mm CA, 1.4lbs $300 Add a 1.8x OCA and premium 19mm's and your price is $597 A hard to beat deal.
BN 30
If you have a few hundred more to spend and want a unit that compares to the best in every category. Then the LT Echelon 30mm CA might be for you. Great for light scopes with awesome DS and planetary potential. If you want to stay in the 1.25 format then this is your best choice.

Black Night Echelon LT 30mm CA, .75 Lbs
BN 35
All options for these two units are on the 1.25" Black Night Page including the new zoOM OCa and Self centering Diophers. These two all 1.25" binoviewers, that is the 22mm and the 30mm are completely compatible with all the correctors and FLR's " accessories. These are for Large and small scopes alike because of their size weight and 1.25" format.

Now we move into new territory. The Echelon UP 35mm is an interim unit between the true 1.25" units and the Elite 2" units. It is a very strong for a 1.25 unit and a little Weak for a 2" unit. So it is in a class all its own. It has a unmatched Illuminated field for a Bino with a set of 1.25" eyepiece holders. It does have a 2" base since it has a too large bottom Clear aperture (35mm)for a 1.25" focuser shaft which would restricted it to roughly 29mm CA, so a 2" base is necessary. It will use all the Elite Units optical correctors. Use it for the you most demanding deep sky objects were A wide TFOV is not important(Tne 2" Binos will raise the bar there) but brightness is. Try a set of my 24mm WA or 32mm UP eyepieces(you will not be disappointed). Pans would certainly not be wasted in this unit since no unit will Illuminate them better. The UP Echelon will have the widest TFOV possible for a 1.25" eyepieces format and 1.325x mag factor.

Black Night Echelon UP 35mm CA, 1.0 Lbs
BN 40
Now we have the Black Night Elite 40. It is a first in a line of true 2" binoviewers. This units is a perfect balance between size and performance. Use this unit if you want to use 2" eyepieces and low mag correctors (1.5x or even lower 1.325x) for the lowest mag and widest TFOV possible for your scope. No other corrector to date will give this low of a power and only has a 10mm intravel requirement. This unit may be considered optimal for Dobs and refractors since the OCA technology gives a it a boost when compared to the 45mm unit.

Black Night Elite 40mm CA, 1.7lbs
BN 45
Now what might be considered the Grand Daddy of them all. The 45mm unit (Why not the 50mm unit you say.) The 45mm unit is the ultimate balance at present between optical path and clear aperture. 7.25" OP and 45mm of CA. This gives it the greatest advantage in Fully Illuminated Area at the eyepiece. At f8 this represents a 250% increase in FIA over what is presently possible for a 1.25" unit.(Such as the Echelon 30mm unit.)This benefit shows up the most in scope like the SCT. CA rules here. So the 45mm unit and a SCT or MCT with 35mm-40mm will give the ultimate DS view. Even better then the 40mm. So for Dobs and Refractors the 40mm is hard to beat, but for SCT's the 45mm is king.

Black Night Elite 45mm CA, 1.85lbs

Here at the bottom are the details.

Picture will be coming soon. This is the

Siebert VIP binoviewer for those who want more aperture then is presently available on the market elsewhere. And not pay more. How does this binoviewer differ from the 35mm Echelon on this page. #1 it will not be drop dead gorgeous like the 35mm Echelon with it's custom made look. But that were the disadvantages end.

The VIP will come in either Prisms or optional all mirror .Both will be based on a 40mm beam splitter with a lower CA of 40mm. Optical path in the prism based units will be around 130mm giving it by far the best "CA vs OP" ratio of any binoviewer on the market.

The closest being AP Baader 28mm CA and 114mm OP.  This means in an SCT with the VIP you will get 100% illumination out to a 28mm field stop  ((((which is a slight overkill since the largest 1.25" eyepieces being 27mm)))) vs.  Baader's 16mm full Illumination at the field stop.

How about at f-5 the Baader gives a  100% Dia spot of Illumination of 4mm. The VIP having a 100% Dia spot of 12mm min or 3x. Other binoviewers on the market would be far less even then Baader. The prisms are dielectric as is the beam splitter. The units will have free Self Centering Diopters on both sides. The 40mm CA at the bottom will make it necessary to have 2" base although having 1.25" eyepieces holders. It will be lighter in weight then almost any 1.25" binoviewer on the market.

The best thing is its price. At $800 you are in the lower premium price range. The Baader compared above although not matching it's CA/OP specs is over $1600 new or double the price. So this makes the Siebert VIP unique in it's or any price range.

Do I think you will like it? The specs no doubt. The pictures will show that although having all the features commonly associated  with compensation free IPD adjustment style binoviewers that are the standard in terms of ease of use. The Appearance will be a departure from the norm. This was certainly true of the Black Knight Echelon and Elite series although they held to the traditional basic shape of today's binoviewer. But a lot considerations were juggled to make these the biggest CA and the lightest binos on the market. So no extra housings are superimposed to give it the look of symmetry. That has been dropped from these in favor of what will likly be to "some" more important considerations.

This does not mean they will not be attractive. By no means. A lot of cosmetic touches are being added to these to give them a beauty all their own. The T-6 Aluminum and black Delrin composite are very tastefully done to make these binoviewers an attractive novelty.

As with all my Binoviewer products they will have 60 day money back guarantee. More to come in a month. Keep an eye out for pictures. You may reserve one and will not be billed until shipping time and avoid the possibility of having a long wait as it the case with my 35 Echelon and 2" Elite Series binoviewers. Clear Skies.
