Lanthanum
reg series vs. Siebert ultrawide series.

Meade 9.5mm vs. Siebert |
Below
is a special edition of Siebert eyepieces. This is an attempt to
match the performance characteristics and comfort of use of much more
expensive eyepieces. Custom optical elements are used in
critical places to boost performance.
In tests conducted on this superwide series the
performance characteristics of these eyepieces far exceeded my initial
expectations. People have compared some of my other quality
eyepieces to many premium brands (Panoptics, Naglers, Pentax,
etc.). If that was the case of those eyepieces then hopefully
these will be even better received considering the cost and
construction put into these eyepieces. These eyepieces are bulkier than my normal stock
7mm-21mm's and are not designed for small, inexpensive (60mm
refractor) scopes. Although these will bring out the best in
moderate to high priced scopes. The on axis sharpness seems
extraordinary and the edge clarity rivals any eyepiece that I have
used thus far in the same mm and fov classes. Then Add to this
20mm's of eye relief because of the extra-ordinary size lens used
(22mm's dia.). The bottom magnifier doublet measures
25mm's dia. This is much larger than the magnifiers used in most
Lanthanum series eyepieces, especially in sizes from
10mm-15mm's. Some of these elements measure no more than
between 10mm-15mm's as seen in the 3rd picture to the left. This
may drastically reduce light throughput and apparent brightness.
20mm's is the stated eye relief. The eyecup is very
comfortable to use and has a quick folddown feature.
This
eyepiece may be an astrophotographers dream since it allows for
extremely high power with the use of an additional barlow with
virtually no vignetting. In tests done with various cameras the
20mm's of eye relief allowed for there to be no limit to the fov. This
allowed for an entire image such as the moon to be photographed as a
single image in magnifications exceeding 120x. With most
eyepieces the moon would have to be photographed in composite images
instead of one huge image. This is the first eyepiece that has
allowed me to achieve this type of magnification while keeping the
moon in a single field with a little room around the edges to
spare. This allows for the widest possibly photograph area at
some of the highest magnifications. Even with lower power
eyepieces extremely barlowed up, the 50 deg. fov of most high
eye relief eyepieces limits the amount of image that can be taken in
in one fov. But the combined high eye relief and superwide field
made a big difference. In fact in my digital camera tests my
camera could not see the edges of the fov unlike other photographs
done at various magnifications under 25mm's.
In
short these are guaranteed to outperform in terms of fov, eye
relief and
sharpness (on and off axis) than any eyepiece in their price
range. I will let others determine thru review and
otherwise how these stack up against the really high dollar
eyepieces. There is a full 30 day money back guarantee (less
shipping) on these eyepieces.
Because
of the costs involved in assembling these eyepieces these are only
subject to a 5% discount on the purchase of 3 or more.
On
the left is a few pictures to give you the idea of the size and
dimensions of the below eyepieces. Also included is a size
comparison of the 9mm to a Meade 9.5mm plossl. If you have any
further question please feel free to contact us.
Keep
in mind that all optics are brand new, custom made elements. Hopefully this will convey that these are not cheap optics sitting in
some surplus shed.
